Frequently asked questions
Which formula is most accurate?
The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings and for medication dosing. The Miller formula is the most recent (1983) and may be more accurate for modern populations. All four are estimates — your ideal weight depends on your body composition, frame size, and muscle mass.
Why do the formulas give different results?
Each formula was developed from different populations and time periods. Devine (1974) was based on actuarial data, Robinson (1983) used NHANES data, Hamwi (1964) used a simple rule of thumb, and Miller (1983) used a larger sample. The variation reflects different definitions of 'ideal.'
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas estimate the weight associated with the longest life expectancy, but they don't account for body composition. A muscular athlete may be above their 'ideal' weight but very healthy. Focus on body fat percentage and overall health markers instead.
Does this account for frame size?
None of these formulas account for frame size (small, medium, large). People with larger frames may be healthily above the formula estimates, while those with smaller frames may be healthily below. Use wrist circumference to estimate frame size for a more personalized range.
